In the winter of 2016, the life of 21-year-old Justin T. Ortiz was tragically cut short in New Bedford, Massachusetts. On the night of December 27th, a 911 call led police to an apartment building at 51 Tallman Street, where they discovered Ortiz in a second-floor hallway, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. First responders rushed him to St. Luke's Hospital, and he was later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Justin Ortiz, a former U.S.
Marine and graduate of Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, succumbed to his injuries on December 30, 2016.
The investigation into the shooting, which was quickly ruled a homicide, began to unfold. Witnesses reported seeing several individuals leaving the scene shortly after the sound of gunfire. In the weeks that followed, investigators made progress. In January 2017, police arrested two men in connection with the case. One of them, Joshua Lobo, then 21, was identified as a member of the Latin Kings gang and was initially charged with misleading investigators and witness intimidation. Another man, 21-year-old Justin Camacho, was also arrested and charged with witness intimidation as part of the ongoing investigation into Ortiz's death.
For years, the case progressed through the legal system. The initial charges against the suspects evolved as the investigation continued. Ultimately, on July 1, 2021, a significant development occurred when Joshua Joel Lobo was indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter and armed robbery in connection with the death of Justin Ortiz. He was arraigned in Fall River Superior Court on August 27, 2021, bringing the case one step closer to resolution, with his case awaiting trial.
