On a day meant for celebration, Easter Sunday of 2017, the life of Aracelys Valdez Deleon, a 40-year-old White / Caucasian woman, was tragically cut short in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The mother of four from Lowell was with her companion, 25-year-old Jazmin Patrocino, outside the La Cava nightclub on the evening of April 16th. The night took a violent turn when shots rang out, leaving Aracelys fatally wounded and Patrocino seriously injured.
The senseless act of violence sent shockwaves through the community, leaving a family to grieve a beloved mother, daughter, and friend.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, Luis Rodriguez, a 24-year-old man from the nearby city of Haverhill. The events leading to the shooting began when Rodriguez was denied entry into the La Cava nightclub because he was carrying a firearm. Rather than leaving, Rodriguez allegedly crossed the street and opened fire on Deleon and Patrocino. In the immediate aftermath, authorities began a search for the perpetrator, who had fled the scene. Initial reports indicated that police were looking for Deleon's "ex-boyfriend" in connection with her murder.
A few days after the fatal shooting, the search for the suspect extended beyond Massachusetts. On April 21, 2017, Luis Rodriguez was located and arrested in Sulphur Springs, Texas. When he was apprehended, he was in possession of a false identification and bus tickets to Phoenix and Los Angeles, suggesting he was attempting to evade capture. Following his arrest, Rodriguez was extradited back to Massachusetts to face charges for the murder of Aracelys Valdez Deleon and the assault on Jazmin Patrocino. He was indicted on charges including murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, armed assault to murder, and illegal possession of a firearm.
Years later, justice was served. In May 2023, a jury found Luis Rodriguez guilty of first-degree murder with deliberate premeditation. He was also convicted on charges related to the shooting of Patrocino and illegal possession of a firearm. The conviction brought a long-awaited conclusion for the family of Aracelys Valdez Deleon. Rodriguez faced a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring that the man responsible for the Easter Sunday tragedy would be held accountable for his actions.
