In the early evening hours of June 13, 2017, the life of 19-year-old Black/African American male Javoni Paul Boyd was tragically cut short. Boyd was fatally shot in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston, becoming the city's 18th homicide victim of the year. The incident, which occurred around 7 p.m. on Delhi Street, marked the second murder in the neighborhood in as many nights.
A resident of Boston, Boyd was the son of Edwin and Elaine Casey and a father to two young children, Tayannie Ja'veah and Jayonie Paula Boyd.
The Boston Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the deadly shooting. Their efforts were aided by tips from the community, which proved crucial in identifying those responsible for Boyd's death. On Sunday, June 25, 2017, just under two weeks after the shooting, police arrested the first suspect. Jakyres McKinney, a 25-year-old, was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was ordered held without bail following his arraignment.
The investigation did not end with McKinney's arrest. Law enforcement continued to pursue leads, and two days later, on June 27, a second man was apprehended. Kijana Walker, 20, of Dorchester, was arrested in the early morning on Greenock Street in Dorchester and also charged with the murder of Javoni Boyd. Several months later, on September 29, 2017, the investigation culminated in the arrest of a third suspect. Jerome Greenaway, 24, of Mattapan, was charged for his role in Boyd's death, bringing the number of individuals accused in the case to three.
