On the evening of May 4, 2018, 58-year-old Black/African American male Clayborn Blair was fatally shot in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. in a park at the Mildred C. Hailey apartment complex on Centre Street. Blair, a father of three and a Navy veteran, was in the park with a group of about 15 people when a gunman opened fire. He and another man, 23-year-old Christopher Joyce, were innocent victims in the attack.
Both men were transported to area hospitals where they were pronounced dead. A 4-year-old boy was also grazed by a bullet but was not seriously injured.
The investigation into the double homicide led Boston Police to identify Wilvin Guity, a 28-year-old from Dorchester, as the suspect. Surveillance footage played a crucial role in his identification, capturing a man in a gray hoodie and distinctively patterned sneakers getting out of a car, entering the apartment complex, and opening fire on the group. The same man was later seen on camera entering a liquor store without the hoodie but still wearing the unique sneakers. A search of Guity's home resulted in the recovery of the same sneakers worn by the shooter.
Wilvin Guity, also known as Wilvin Guity-Beckels, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was ordered held without bail during his arraignment. In June 2022, a jury found Guity-Beckels guilty of two counts of first-degree murder. A first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Authorities stated that the shooting was an act of senseless gun violence and that Blair and Joyce were not the intended targets.
