On a spring evening in Boston, the life of Israel Mayhew, a 26-year-old Black man from Dorchester, was tragically cut short. On May 19, 2020, Mayhew was at a playground in the Hyde Park neighborhood when gunfire erupted. The shooting left him fatally wounded and also injured a woman who was with him. The incident took place on property managed by the state's Department of Conservation and Recreation.
The investigation into the homicide was conducted by the State Police with assistance
from the Boston Police. Less than a month later, on June 16, 2020, authorities announced the apprehension of two suspects in connection with the deadly shooting. The individuals taken into custody were identified as brothers, 21-year-old Jerry Pierre-Louis of Mattapan and 18-year-old Vierry Pierre-Louis of Randolph.
The brothers were brought to face justice for their alleged roles in the incident. They were charged with murder for the death of Israel Mayhew. In addition to the murder charge, they also faced charges of assault with intent to murder related to the woman who was injured in the attack, and assault with a dangerous weapon. The suspects were scheduled for a virtual court appearance in the West Roxbury Division of the Boston Municipal Court on June 17, 2020.
