In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Worcester, Massachusetts, the life of Carlos Miguel Cruz, a 44-year-old Hispanic man, was brought to a tragic and violent end. On May 8, 2021, the widowed father of four sons found himself outside the Paku Lounge on Chandler Street. At approximately 1:27 a.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the night, and Cruz was struck by multiple bullets. Despite his grave injuries, he managed to run across the street before collapsing on the sidewalk.
Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his wounds were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at 2:13 a.m.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified suspects. Three days after the incident, on May 11, a 28-year-old Worcester man named Angel Ortiz-Santos turned himself in to the police. He was initially charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and illegal possession of a firearm. As the legal process unfolded, a grand jury indicted Ortiz-Santos in June on more severe charges, including murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was subsequently ordered held without bail.
The police investigation continued, suggesting that more than one individual may have been involved in the fatal encounter. Two months later, on July 23, authorities made a second arrest. Angel Rosaria, a 26-year-old resident of Worcester, was taken into custody on a warrant connected to the shooting death of Carlos Cruz. The investigation into the circumstances that led to the shooting remained ongoing as the suspects faced the justice system.
