In the autumn of 1909, the life of Thomas M. Eckhart, a 55-year-old male, came to an abrupt and violent end in Salem, Oregon. On Friday, October 1, Eckhart, a Patrolman with the Salem Police Department, was in the process of arresting a man for whom he believed there was an outstanding warrant. The subject appeared cooperative, and the officer was walking him to the city jail.
As they reached the entrance to the jail, the situation took a tragic turn.
The suspect created a distraction, suddenly producing a concealed handgun. Before Eckhart could react, the man shot him in the abdomen. As he attempted to flee, the assailant shot the officer a second time, striking him in the leg. Despite his grave injuries, Officer Eckhart was rushed to Salem Hospital for medical attention.
The wounds, however, proved to be fatal, and Thomas M. Eckhart succumbed to his injuries later that same day. The man who shot him managed to escape, prompting a search for the suspect. Eight days after the deadly encounter, the individual responsible for Eckhart's death surrendered to the authorities. He was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder, though the conviction was later overturned and reduced to manslaughter. Patrolman Eckhart was survived by his wife and five children.
