In the predawn hours of September 3, 1983, the life of 17-year-old Derreck Sherman, an African-American male, was tragically cut short in the parking lot of the Knickerbocker Motel in Portland, Oregon. At approximately 3:10 a.m., as Sherman was walking with an associate across the motel's parking lot located in the 4700 block of N Interstate Avenue, a sudden loud noise pierced the quiet of the morning.
