In the early morning hours of January 11, 1992, Pedro Pablo Venegas Pacheco, a Hispanic male, was socializing with several friends. They were gathered in the dining room of a two-story rental unit located at 6826 NE Killingsworth Street in Portland, Oregon, drinking beer. The gathering was abruptly shattered at approximately 2 a.m. by an unexpected and violent intrusion.
Without any warning, a man described as an Asian male appeared at the sliding glass door of the apartment.
He immediately began firing a pistol at close range into the room where the friends were gathered. The gunfire was indiscriminate, striking multiple people within the room. Two individuals were hit by the bullets, one of whom was Pedro Pablo Venegas Pacheco.
Tragically, Pedro Pacheco succumbed to his injuries at the scene, having sustained numerous gunshot wounds. He was a legal immigrant who was employed and had no criminal record. He was not a resident of the apartment where the fatal shooting occurred. The investigation that followed was unable to determine if Pacheco had any prior contact with any Asian males that might have led to the incident. The motive for the shooting remains a mystery, with the shooter appearing to have fired randomly into the group. The case remains an unsolved cold case, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder.
