In a quiet Salem, Oregon neighborhood, the morning of May 22, 2012, was shattered by a horrific discovery that would leave the community in stunned disbelief. Inside a burning home on Fisher Road, firefighters found the bodies of 26-year-old Natalya Lazukin and her three young daughters, including 3-year-old Angelica Lazukin, a White female. The initial horror of the house fire soon gave way to the grim reality of a multiple homicide.
As investigators began to piece together the tragic
events, it became clear that this was not a random act of violence. Angelica and her 1-year-old sister, Zoe, had been shot to death, while their mother, Natalya, had also died from gunshot wounds. The youngest child, 4-month-old Sefi, died from probable asphyxiation. The investigation quickly pointed to one primary suspect: the children's father and Natalya's husband, 27-year-old Nikolay Lazukin. Evidence suggested that he had used loaves of bread to muffle the sound of the gunshots before setting the family home on fire in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime.
The search for Nikolay Lazukin came to a somber end later that day. His body was discovered inside his vehicle in Cottage Grove, about 60 miles south of Salem. He had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. With the perpetrator's death, the case was ultimately classified as a murder-suicide, and no arrests were made. The investigation revealed an even darker picture of that fateful day, as authorities also linked Nikolay to the beating death of a 21-year-old man, Devin Matlock, which occurred just hours before the family was killed. Matlock was a stranger to the Lazukin family, adding another layer of senselessness to the tragedy. The motive behind Nikolay Lazukin's violent rampage remains unclear, leaving a community to mourn the loss of an entire family and another young man.
