In the quiet, early morning hours of Saturday, October 20, 2018, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded in a northeast Bend, Oregon neighborhood, culminating in the death of 33-year-old Kyle Scott Adams, a White male. The incident, which also resulted in the death of his neighbor, began to unfold around 1:23 a.m. when residents on Northeast Sierra Drive were startled by the sound of gunshots.
These calls to police, coupled with a 911 call from a resident of the home, Brennan Willey Pebbles, reporting he had shot a man, brought law enforcement to the scene.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene. Inside the home shared by Adams and Pebbles, they found two men with gunshot wounds. One man, later identified as 31-year-old Tyler William Herrick, was deceased at the scene. Kyle Scott Adams was found with life-threatening injuries and was rushed to St. Charles Bend hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his wounds. The initial investigation revealed a complex and rapidly escalating confrontation that had begun just moments before.
According to the investigation, the incident started when Herrick, who lived next door, entered the home and went into the bedroom where Adams was sleeping. After Adams demanded he leave, Herrick initially complied. However, the situation took a deadly turn when Herrick returned to the front of the residence armed with an AR-15 rifle. He then fired multiple shots through the front window, striking and critically injuring Adams. During this time, Adams had sent a text message to his roommate, Brennan Willey Pebbles, alerting him to the escalating danger.
Pebbles, who had been away from the house, returned home to a terrifying scene. He ran upstairs, armed himself with his 9mm handgun, and took refuge in the master bedroom's bathroom. Herrick, having re-entered the house, began a methodical search for Pebbles. The confrontation reached its fatal conclusion when Herrick entered the master bedroom and was shot and killed by Pebbles. Following a thorough investigation by the Bend Police Department, the Oregon State Police Crime Lab, and the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office, it was determined that Pebbles had acted in self-defense. As a result, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Kyle Scott Adams and Tyler William Herrick.
