In the early morning hours of December 2, 2020, a young Hispanic man named Gabriel Rivera, aged 20, was found dead in north Portland, Oregon. His death was the result of gunshot wounds, and the Oregon State Medical Examiner swiftly ruled it a homicide. Rivera's body was discovered by police officers who were conducting a welfare check near North Columbia Boulevard and Bank Street around 7 a.m.
At the time of his death, he was the 48th homicide victim in Portland that year.
Having recently moved to Portland from Seaside in mid-October with his fiancée, Rivera was reportedly filled with hopes and dreams for their future together. He was working diligently, holding down a job as a forklift driver where he worked 10-hour shifts, and also making deliveries for Door Dash to build a good life. His family recalls his aspirations of having a large family one day. In his teenage years, Rivera had attended Seaside High School and was remembered for his love of mountain biking and skateboarding.
On the night of his death, Rivera had left the Pier Park area on foot. He was discovered not more than a mile from his last known location. The hours that followed the initial news reports were filled with uncertainty for his family, who later had the heartbreaking task of identifying his body at the city morgue.
Despite the ongoing investigation by homicide detectives, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with Gabriel Rivera's murder. The case remains an unsolved homicide, leaving his family and community searching for answers and justice. The Portland Police Bureau has not released any further information regarding a potential motive or any persons of interest.
