In the small town of Stayton, Oregon, the life of a beloved caregiver, Karen Schaefer, a 70-year-old Caucasian female, was tragically cut short on the evening of January 10, 2021. Stayton Police officers were dispatched to a residence on West Water Street around 7:30 p.m. following a report of suspicious circumstances. Upon entering the home, they made a grim discovery; Karen Schaefer was deceased, having sustained an apparent gunshot wound.
Present at the scene was Brian Schaefer, 38,
who also resided in the home. He was immediately taken into custody by the authorities. The investigation was subsequently handed over to the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Brian Schaefer was formally charged with second-degree murder with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the death of his aunt, Karen. The community was left in shock, mourning the loss of a woman described as having a heart of gold and a meek, loving, gentle, and kind way about her. Karen was a fourth-generation resident of the area, a graduate of Stayton High School, and a retired registered nurse who had transitioned into a highly sought-after caregiver in her later years.
The legal proceedings against Brian Schaefer took an unexpected turn over two years later. In March 2023, the murder case against him was dismissed. The Marion County District Attorney's Office filed a motion to dismiss the charges, stating that after further investigation, they could not prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. The motion cited that it would be in the interest of justice for the case to be dismissed. Consequently, Brian Schaefer, who was scheduled to stand trial, was cleared of the charges, leaving the death of Karen Schaefer without a legal resolution.
