On the evening of September 20, 2021, a dispute that began on the streets of Gresham, Oregon, tragically escalated, ending the life of 38-year-old Dashawn Marquis Hudson, a Black male from Portland. The fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of a Walmart Neighborhood Market located at 3900 West Powell Boulevard. What started as a road rage incident culminated in a violent confrontation that left Hudson's family grieving an immense loss.
Earlier that evening, Hudson was driving his
GMC Yukon SUV with his wife and four children when he reportedly cut off a white pickup truck on Southeast Powell Boulevard. The driver of the pickup, later identified as 26-year-old Daniel Hipshman, allegedly retaliated by cutting off Hudson's vehicle before both drivers pulled into the same Walmart parking lot. After Hudson dropped his family off to go into the store, the argument between the two men intensified.
According to witnesses, Hudson exited his vehicle and approached Hipshman's truck, allegedly brandishing what appeared to be a pistol. This was later determined to be a BB gun. In response, Hipshman fired two shots from inside his truck through the passenger window, striking Hudson in the upper torso. Witnesses reported hearing the suspect yell, "that's what you get for cutting me off," before speeding away from the scene. Hearing the gunshots from inside the store, Hudson's wife and children rushed outside to the tragic scene. Gresham Police officers, responding to multiple 911 calls around 6:15 p.m., found Hudson deceased in the parking lot. An autopsy later confirmed he died from two gunshot wounds.
Investigators were able to identify Daniel Hipshman as the suspect through witness statements and cell phone footage from the scene. They also learned he had arranged to meet someone in the parking lot to sell a television. Hipshman was arrested early on September 22, 2021, and was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center.
