In the early morning hours of December 19, 2021, a dispute outside a bar in Portland, Oregon, tragically ended the life of 27-year-old Daquan Taeshawn James Turner. The Black / African American man was fatally shot in the Mt. Scott-Arleta neighborhood, a devastating outcome to what began as a verbal altercation.
The incident unfolded around 2:08 a.m. outside a bar located on the 8000 block of Southeast Foster Road.
According to court documents, an argument escalated into a physical fight. Turner became involved in the altercation alongside his cousin. At one point during the brawl, Turner's cousin reportedly armed himself with a handgun. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation by disarming his cousin, the gun discharged, striking Turner.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Daquan Taeshawn James Turner deceased. The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Officer later confirmed that his death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound. The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect.
Later that same day, police arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting. The suspect was identified as Turner's cousin. He was subsequently booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center and charged with manslaughter in the first degree, assault in the second degree, and unlawful use of a weapon. Homicide detectives believed that some witnesses may have left the scene without speaking to the police and publicly requested that anyone with information come forward.
