In the early evening of July 8, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Joevon Leroy Patterson, a 21-year-old male, was killed in the shooting, which occurred near the intersection of Southeast 112th Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard. The medical examiner would later confirm that Patterson died from a gunshot wound in a death ruled a homicide.
Another man was also struck by the gunfire and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Responding to the 7:11 p.m. call, Portland police officers arrived to find a chaotic scene. Witnesses reported that the suspects had fled, but they were soon spotted by officers near Southeast 120th Avenue and Powell Boulevard. A foot chase ensued as the individuals ran into the surrounding neighborhood. Believing the suspects to be armed, authorities quickly established a large perimeter, cordoning off streets and advising residents to shelter in place, locking their doors and windows. The extensive search operation involved numerous officers, including the Special Emergency Reaction Team the Crisis Negotiation Team K9 units, and an aerial support unit that circled the area.
After a methodical and tense search of the neighborhood that lasted for hours, police detained several individuals. These persons of interest were taken in for questioning by homicide detectives. However, despite the massive law enforcement response and the initial detentions, all of the individuals were later released. To date, no charges have been filed in connection with the shooting of Joevon Patterson.
The investigation into Patterson's death remains open and active. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest, urging anyone with knowledge of the case to contact the detectives assigned to the investigation. The lack of a named suspect or any arrests has left a void for a family and community seeking answers and justice for the loss of a young life.
