In the quiet, rural landscape of Central Point, Oregon, the early morning hours of October 13, 2022, were shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 38-year-old Nicholas Steven Davis, a White male from Grants Pass. In a gravel pullout near the Denman Wildlife Area on Kirtland Road, Davis was shot multiple times. First responders, including a Mercy Flights ambulance, arrived at the desolate scene to find him gravely wounded.
He was swiftly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival.
The perpetrator did not remain at the scene, initiating a flight that would soon involve multiple law enforcement agencies. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Thomas Anthony Murphy II of Medford, fled the area, prompting a search that located him on Interstate 5 South near the town of Talent. When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, Murphy refused to comply, triggering a high-speed pursuit down the interstate. The chase continued south until an officer from the Ashland Police Department successfully deployed spike strips, disabling the suspect's vehicle near mile marker 13.5, just south of Ashland. With his vehicle stopped, Thomas Anthony Murphy II was taken into custody without further incident.
Following his arrest, Murphy was lodged in the Jackson County Jail. He faced a litany of serious charges, including second-degree murder for the death of Nicholas Steven Davis. The charges also included two counts of second-degree attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and attempting to elude law enforcement. The investigation into the shooting was a collaborative effort, with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office being assisted by detectives from the Oregon State Police and the Medford Police Department as part of a Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit call out.
