On August 26, 1902, Chief of Police William A. 'Bill' Fanning of the Coopers Police Department in West Virginia was fatally shot in the line of duty. Earlier that day, Chief Fanning had arrested an individual for violating an injunction. While escorting the suspect to jail, the man made a sudden movement, leading Chief Fanning to believe he was reaching for a weapon. In response, Chief Fanning discharged his firearm, resulting in the suspect's death.
