In the late summer of 1977, the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer, 34-year-old White male George Stewart Maynard, was tragically cut short in Welch, West Virginia. On September 8th, Deputy Sheriff Maynard of the McDowell County Sheriff's Office was engaged in the seemingly routine task of questioning two suspects in connection with a recent breaking and entering. The day took a fatal turn inside the sheriff's office, a place that should have been a symbol of safety and order.
