In the late winter of 1900, a sense of duty called Deputy Sheriff Sam Payne and his brother to a home in Peeryville, a community in McDowell County, West Virginia. Payne, a 35-year-old male, was attempting to serve a warrant on a man who had been recently released from prison after serving time for murder. The warrant was for a lesser charge, that of the man having fired his gun several days earlier.
