On February 19, 2014, a significant incident occurred in Dunbar, West Virginia, resulting in the death of Rick Dean Wilcox, a 65-year-old resident. The events unfolded when officers from the Dunbar Police Department arrived at Wilcox's residence in the 1400 block of West Virginia Avenue to serve a domestic violence petition. This petition, issued earlier that day, required Wilcox to leave the residence.
