On February 4, 2016, John Mackey, an 18-year-old, was fatally shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago. The shooting took place during a time when Chicago was experiencing an alarming rise in gun violence, with many young people becoming victims of gang conflicts and street violence. Humboldt Park, in particular, has been known for its history of gang activity, and Mackey's death is reflective of the struggles faced by many young people in these neighborhoods.
