Maria Ramos, along with five members of her family, including two children, suffered fatal injuries in what authorities later determined was a targeted attack.
The investigation led to the arrest of Diego Uribe, who was related to the family through marriage, and his girlfriend, Jafeth Ramos. The two were charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder. Evidence, including DNA from Maria’s fingernails and phone records, linked Uribe to the crime. Both suspects eventually confessed, and it was revealed that financial desperation and underlying personal conflicts contributed to the motive for the crime.
Maria and her family members were well-known in the community, and their deaths left a deep impact on the neighborhood. The entire family was later buried in Mexico, with assistance from the Mexican Consulate in Chicago.
