On New Year's Day in 2021, the community of Bridgeport, West Virginia, was shaken by the tragic death of Kelly Marie James Zummo, a 48-year-old Caucasian female. A loving mother to two sons, she was a respected and accomplished engineer who had built a successful career in the aerospace industry. Her life, however, was cut short in an act of violence that unfolded outside her home.
The incident occurred on the morning of January 1, 2021, following a heated argument between Kelly and her husband, Vincent Zummo. The dispute escalated tragically when Vincent, a 47-year-old supervisory federal probation officer, began shooting at his wife. In an attempt to flee, Kelly's vehicle crashed into a nearby home. Responding officers found her deceased in the vehicle.
The investigation quickly revealed the incident to be a murder-suicide. After taking his wife's life, Vincent Zummo returned to their residence, where he then took his own life.
The authorities confirmed that he was the sole suspect in his wife's death, and as such, no arrests were made. The couple left behind their two sons, who were tragically orphaned by the devastating events of that day.
Kelly Zummo was remembered by her colleagues and community as a brilliant and dedicated professional. She was an engineering manager at Pratt & Whitney Engine Services in Bridgeport, where she had worked since 1998. Her contributions to the aerospace field were significant, and she was considered a pioneer for women in the industry. Her sudden and violent death was a profound loss for her family, friends, and all who knew her. In her memory, her family requested that donations be made to domestic violence organizations.
