On June 3, 2022, Deputy Sheriff Thomas E. Baker III, a 49-year-old law enforcement officer from Nicholas County, West Virginia, lost his life in a tragic incident involving a shootout. The event occurred in the Birch River area of the county, where Deputy Baker and another deputy had responded to a domestic disturbance call.
