In the autumn of 1993, the life of 32-year-old Terry DeGeus, a White/Caucasian male from the Mason City, Iowa area, came to a violent and tragic end. On November 5, 1993, DeGeus disappeared, leaving behind a daughter and a family who would wait years for answers. His disappearance was not a simple missing person case; it was the final act in a brutal campaign of witness elimination orchestrated by a burgeoning methamphetamine kingpin.
DeGeus had become entangled in the drug trafficking
operation of Dustin Honken, a chemistry student turned large-scale meth producer. DeGeus, along with another man named Greg Nicholson, served as a dealer for Honken. However, the criminal enterprise began to unravel when Nicholson started cooperating with federal investigators. Fearful of Nicholson's testimony, Honken and his girlfriend, Angela Johnson, murdered Nicholson, his girlfriend Lori Duncan, and her two young daughters in July 1993.
With one potential witness silenced, Honken's attention turned to DeGeus. Investigators, now lacking their key witness, had to drop their initial case against Honken. It was in this climate of fear and uncertainty that Angela Johnson, who had previously been in a relationship with DeGeus, lured him to an isolated location. There, Honken was waiting. He brutally beat DeGeus with a bat before shooting him to death. For nearly seven years, Terry DeGeus's fate remained a mystery, his body hidden from those who sought to bring his killer to justice.
The break in the case finally came in 2000. While incarcerated on drug charges, Angela Johnson, in a misguided attempt to concoct a false confession from another inmate, drew a map that revealed the burial sites of the victims. This crucial piece of evidence led investigators to a wooded area outside Mason City where they unearthed the remains of Greg Nicholson and the Duncan family. Shortly after, in a farm field miles away, the body of Terry DeGeus was discovered.
Dustin Honken and Angela Johnson were subsequently charged and convicted for the murders. Honken was found guilty on multiple counts, including the murder of Terry DeGeus, and was ultimately sentenced to death. He was executed by the federal government on July 17, 2020. Angela Johnson was also convicted for her role in the killings and received a death sentence, which was later commuted to life in prison. The arrests and convictions finally brought a measure of closure to the family of Terry DeGeus, whose life was cut short in a cold-blooded effort to protect a criminal empire.
