In the quiet town of Le Mars, Iowa, the evening of May 10, 2006, was shattered by a grim discovery that would forever scar the community. Responding to a neighbor's 911 call just before 6 p.m., authorities arrived at the Hayden residence at 750 5th Avenue SW to a scene of unimaginable horror. Inside, they found the bodies of an entire family, victims of a tragic murder-suicide.
Among them was Shawn Michael Hayden, a 17-year-old White male, whose promising life was cut short by his own father.
The investigation, led by Le Mars Police Chief Stuart Dekkenga, quickly pieced together the devastating events of that day. It was determined that Timothy Bruce Hayden, 38, had shot and killed his wife, Marilyn Rose, 37, and their two children, Shawn and his 15-year-old sister, Lindsay Rachelle, before turning the gun on himself. The shootings were believed to have occurred early that morning. When officers arrived, they found all the exits of the home had been blocked with furniture, forcing them to make a forcible entry.
Inside the house, the scene was heartbreaking. Marilyn's body was discovered upstairs; she had apparently been getting ready for work, which helped investigators establish a timeline for the tragedy. The bodies of Timothy and the two children were found in the lower level of the house. A shotgun, believed to be the weapon used in all four deaths, was found at the scene.
A note written by Timothy was also discovered, though its specific contents were not immediately released to the public.
