Mercedes Ann Wathen, a 25-year-old woman from Des Moines, Iowa, and formerly of Newton, died on Monday, April 2, 2018. She was found dead at a home just south of Des Moines.

The investigation into her death led to the arrest of an 18-year-old man, Jacquarious J'Ray Scoggins, who was charged with Murder in the First Degree, a Class A Felony. Scoggins, also from Des Moines, was arrested on Friday, April 13, 2018.
