In the late morning of Sunday, October 25, 2020, the life of 19-year-old Lavonta Baker, a male resident of Davenport, Iowa, was tragically cut short. Davenport Police responded to a report of shots fired just before 11 a.m. in the 2300 block of West 2nd Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Baker unresponsive inside a vehicle. Medical personnel were called to the scene, but he was pronounced dead.
It was later determined that he had been shot multiple times in what was described as a willful and deliberate act. The incident left the neighborhood shaken, with residents expressing their shock and disbelief at the violence that had unfolded.
The investigation into the shooting led Davenport Police to a suspect, another 19-year-old from Davenport named Sherral Jermaine Tolbert. Tolbert was already in custody at the Scott County Jail on other charges, including first-degree theft for allegedly stealing a vehicle, when he was served with a warrant for the murder of Lavonta Baker. On November 17, 2020, Tolbert was officially charged with first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm in connection with Baker's death. At the time of his arrest for the homicide, Tolbert was on probation for several prior felony convictions.
