On the morning of February 3, 2022, a tragic event unfolded in the parking lot of a medical staffing agency in Milford, Iowa, forever altering the lives of a young family. Shelby Lynn Woizeschke, a 24-year-old Caucasian woman, was arriving for her workday when she was ambushed and shot multiple times. Despite the grave nature of her injuries, Woizeschke was able to make a desperate 911 call, identifying her attacker as Christian Goyne-Yarns, her ex-boyfriend and the father of her two young sons. This crucial piece of information immediately set law enforcement on the trail of the suspect.
First responders found Woizeschke critically wounded and she was quickly transported to a local hospital before being airlifted to a medical center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. As medical professionals fought to save her life, police located and arrested 25-year-old Christian Goyne-Yarns in Spirit Lake without incident, just an hour after the shooting. Initially, Goyne-Yarns was charged with attempted murder, a charge that would soon be tragically upgraded.
For three days, Woizeschke remained on life support, but her injuries proved to be insurmountable. She succumbed to the gunshot wounds on February 6, 2022. Following her death, the charges against Goyne-Yarns were amended to first-degree murder. The investigation that followed pieced together a history of domestic turmoil between the former couple, painting a grim picture of the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter.
In December of 2022, the case against Christian Goyne-Yarns went to trial. The proceedings were moved to Buena Vista County due to the extensive pretrial publicity the case had received. Over the course of the trial, the prosecution presented a compelling case, which included Woizeschke's own words from the 911 call identifying Goyne-Yarns as the shooter. After a three-day trial, the jury took only 90 minutes to return a guilty verdict for first-degree murder. Subsequently, Christian Goyne-Yarns was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. An appeal of his conviction was later denied, solidifying the legal conclusion to this devastating chapter of domestic violence.
