In Ankeny, Iowa, on the morning of May 16, 2022, a tragic incident unfolded that resulted in the death of 4-year-old Savannah Holmes, an African American female. Emergency services were dispatched to a residence on Northeast 5th Street around 11:26 a.m. following a report of a child with a gunshot wound. First responders found Savannah and immediately began rendering aid.
She was then transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting revealed a heartbreaking sequence of events. Savannah's father, 33-year-old Akeem Holmes, had reportedly left a handgun accessible on a couch while he went to answer the front door. In that brief period, the inquisitive young girl found the firearm and accidentally shot herself. The Ankeny Police Department investigated the incident, speaking with family members and neighbors to piece together what had happened. The death was ultimately determined to be the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Following the investigation, Akeem Holmes turned himself in to the authorities in June 2022.
