On a summer morning in Des Moines, Iowa, the life of 32-year-old Sean Dion Chapman, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On July 17, 2022, Chapman was found deceased in his apartment at 3630 Twana Drive, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The discovery marked the city's 10th homicide of the year and set in motion a swift investigation that would uncover a story of a robbery gone wrong.
The events leading to Chapman's death began with a heated argument over a drug
transaction. Three men, Dontaye Jermaine Burton, Antonio Latrell Ross, and Dustin Lee Gobern, were at Chapman's apartment. A dispute between Burton and Chapman escalated into a physical altercation, culminating in Chapman removing Burton from his residence. This initial confrontation, however, was far from over.
Fueled by a desire for retribution and profit, Burton, accompanied by Ross and Gobern, returned to Chapman's apartment. In the ensuing events, Chapman was shot and killed. What followed was a brazen robbery, with the three men callously taking valuables from the apartment. Surveillance footage captured the men leaving the building with Chapman's property, including a PlayStation 4 gaming console. It was Ross who eventually placed the 911 call, reporting Chapman's death to the authorities.
The Des Moines Police Department quickly identified the three men as suspects. Dontaye Burton was apprehended during a traffic stop near the crime scene, where officers discovered he had blood on his clothes and was in possession of the stolen PlayStation 4. A search of a vehicle connected to Burton uncovered the murder weapon, a. 40-caliber handgun, along with other firearms. Antonio Ross and Dustin Gobern were also taken into custody. All three were charged with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Sean Chapman. Dontaye Burton was convicted of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery by a Polk County jury and was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole. His subsequent appeal, which challenged the sufficiency of the evidence presented at his trial, was denied, with the court upholding the jury's verdict. The cases against Antonio Ross and Dustin Gobern also moved through the justice system, seeking to hold them accountable for their roles in the tragic and senseless death of Sean Chapman.
