In the late summer of 2020, the life of Sean Edward Newman, a 36-year-old White Caucasian male from Des Moines, Iowa, was tragically cut short. On the afternoon of September 2nd, Des Moines police responded to a report of a shooting in the 1300 block of 23rd Street, in the neighborhood near Drake University. Upon arrival, officers discovered Newman's body inside an apartment; he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The investigation into Newman's death quickly evolved into a homicide
case. The day after the shooting, authorities announced their first arrest. Whitney Ann Davis, a 33-year-old woman from Des Moines, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. She was subsequently booked into the Polk County Jail.
The case took another turn as the investigation progressed. Initially, police arrested a second suspect, 27-year-old Michael Jermaine Jacobs, and also charged him with first-degree murder. However, this charge would not hold. Investigators uncovered new evidence that revealed inconsistencies in a witness's statements. After this information was presented to the Polk County Attorney's Office, the murder charge against Jacobs was dropped, and he was released from jail.
Continuing their investigation, detectives identified a new suspect. Luis Anibal Alicea-Rodriguez, a 27-year-old resident of West Des Moines, was arrested and faced charges of first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm in connection with Newman's death. As the legal process moved forward, Whitney Ann Davis remained a key figure in the case, with her first-degree murder charge still standing.
