In the early hours of Christmas morning in 1912, a sense of festive celebration turned tragic in the town of Midvale, Utah. William "Billie" Nelson, a 23-year-old male, was serving his community as a special night watchman, brought on to assist the regular officer during the holiday. As the night unfolded, the sound of pistols firing into the air shattered the quiet, drawing the attention of Officer Nelson and his partner.
Near a local saloon around 1:30 a.m., a group of men were wildly
discharging their firearms in what appeared to be a boisterous Christmas celebration. As Officer Nelson approached the individuals, he was tragically ambushed. An assailant, hidden by the darkness, fired a single, fatal shot into the young officer's head, killing him instantly. His fellow officer returned fire at the fleeing suspect, but the shooter vanished into the night.
In the aftermath of the shooting, several suspects were taken into custody. However, despite these arrests, no one was ever ultimately brought to trial for the murder of William "Billie" Nelson. Adding to the heartbreak of the event, Officer Nelson was engaged to be married to the daughter of another Midvale officer who had been murdered near the same location just four months prior. William "Billie" Nelson was laid to rest in the Sandy City Cemetery.
