In the late summer of 2017, the life of 21-year-old Jordon Burtell Moulton, a White male, was brought to a tragic and violent end in Midvale, Utah. On the evening of August 26, police were called to a residence on West Columbia Drive where they discovered Moulton's body. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head, and his death was quickly investigated as a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting would eventually point to a rival gang member, a man named Kaden Michael Gilliatt, who was 20 years old at the time.
The motive behind the killing appeared to be a mix of gang rivalry and personal jealousy. According to court documents, both Moulton and Gilliatt were identified as members of opposing gangs. The conflict between them was reportedly intensified by a personal dispute involving a woman. Investigators interviewed a woman who had been dating Gilliatt during the summer of 2017. She revealed that Gilliatt had seen her messaging Moulton on social media and had reacted with extreme anger, threatening to kill them both if she ever communicated with Moulton again. Following Moulton's death, the woman told police that Gilliatt had "disappeared."
As the investigation progressed, Gilliatt's attempts to cover his tracks began to unravel. While incarcerated on other matters, he made a phone call to a woman, asking her to provide him with a false alibi for the night of the murder. This conversation, along with other evidence, strengthened the case against him. Additionally, an inmate who was held with Gilliatt at the Salt Lake County Jail informed investigators that Gilliatt had confessed to shooting someone in the head and admitted to providing detectives with a fake alibi. In May of 2018, Kaden Michael Gilliatt was charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, and obstructing justice in connection with the death of Jordon Moulton.
