On a tragic morning in Sandy, Utah, on August 19, 2004, the life of 49-year-old Marydell Lupinacci was cut short. A female resident of the Coppergate Apartments for the preceding two months, she was confronted by her estranged husband as she left for work. Words were exchanged before the encounter turned fatal.
The man, 46-year-old Frank Lupinacci Jr., produced a handgun and shot his wife in the head. Marydell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly after taking his wife's life, Frank Lupinacci Jr. turned the weapon on himself. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and died the following day.
Investigations into the murder-suicide revealed a history of domestic turmoil. The couple had filed for divorce in June of that year, and both had sought legal protection from the other. Court records indicate that Marydell had been granted a protective order against her husband just a week before her death, while his petition for a similar order had been dismissed the month prior. Frank Lupinacci Jr. was a convicted felon and was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. The case was closed with no further suspects sought, as the perpetrator had taken his own life.
