In the crisp autumn air of October 10, 2015, the life of 10-year-old Zachary "Zac" Daniel Woodruff, a Caucasian male from Smithfield, Utah, was tragically cut short. What began as a day of outdoor adventure, hiking and riding in the mountains with family and friends—activities he cherished—ended in an unimaginable loss later that evening. Surrounded by his family, the bright and curious boy, known for his happy smile and huge blue eyes, passed away.
The devastating incident unfolded
during a hunting trip in the Monte Cristo Mountain Range in northern Utah. As evening approached, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Zachary was sitting on the floor of a four-wheeler, seeking warmth from the cold. A hunting companion pulled up alongside on another ATV. As the man dismounted and began to remove his rifle from his vehicle, the weapon discharged. The single shot struck Zachary, who was fatally wounded at the scene.
Emergency responders, including deputies and paramedics, rushed to the remote location a mile southeast of Red Spur Mountain. A Life Flight helicopter was also dispatched, but tragically, their efforts to revive the young boy were unsuccessful. The Cache County Sheriff's Office investigated the shooting and determined it to be a heartbreaking accident. Authorities announced that no charges would be filed in connection with the fatal incident. The event was described as a devastating turn to an outing meant to create cherished memories, leaving a family and community to mourn the sudden and profound loss of a beloved child.
