On November 30, 2015, the life of 63-year-old Maranny "Marena" Hatalie Holiday was tragically cut short in the southeastern corner of Utah, within the vast expanse of the Navajo Nation. The female victim was discovered hidden beneath a tree, the victim of fatal gun violence.
An investigation into her death pointed to a dispute over land as the apparent motive. The events leading to her death reportedly began with an argument in Mexican Water, Arizona, but the fatal encounter occurred within the boundaries of Utah.
A suspect, 45-year-old Timothy Lee Smith, was later apprehended. His truck was found stuck in the desert of San Juan County, not far from Mexican Hat. After walking for approximately 30 miles through the desert, Smith surrendered to authorities without a struggle. In January 2016, a federal grand jury indicted Smith on charges of first-degree murder within Indian country and being a felon in possession of a firearm. If convicted of the murder charge, he faced the possibility of a life sentence in prison.
