In the early morning hours of December 19, 2016, a violent encounter in a Layton, Utah, home claimed the life of 24-year-old Taylor James Vancamp, a White male. The tragic events unfolded in a house where Vancamp and several others rented rooms. An argument between Vancamp and his 19-year-old roommate, Christopher S. Fritz, escalated into a physical fight. The altercation, which reportedly started in a hallway and moved into another roommate's room, left Fritz with a black eye.
Following the fistfight, both men went to their separate bedrooms. According to police statements, Fritz, after seeing his injuries in a mirror, "snapped." He then retrieved a handgun from his room, confronted Vancamp, and shot him multiple times. Vancamp was found deceased in his bedroom by police who responded to a 911 call from Fritz's father reporting a "rapid succession of gunshots." Before being shot, Vancamp reportedly yelled, "It wasn't me, bro." After the shooting, Fritz admitted to his father, "I killed Taylor."
Christopher S. Fritz, who turned 20 the day after the shooting, was arrested and taken into custody at the scene. He was subsequently charged with murder. In January 2018, Fritz was convicted for the fatal shooting of his roommate and sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in Utah State Prison. At the time of his death, Vancamp was working as a pizza delivery driver for Domino's, a job he greatly enjoyed. He was remembered by friends and family for his ability to see the good in everyone he met.
