On a tragic day in Layton, Utah, a 26-year-old Caucasian male named Anthony Andrew Child lost his life in a violent encounter. The events of September 27, 2018, began in the early morning hours when two masked figures forced their way into the trailer home where Child resided. The intruders, later identified as 22-year-old Angel Christopher Abreu and a 16-year-old accomplice, were armed and intent on robbery. Abreu carried a rifle, while the teenager held a handgun, and they quickly asserted control by ordering everyone inside to lie on the floor. To show their seriousness, Abreu fired a single warning shot into the floor of the residence.
When Anthony Child emerged from his bedroom, he was confronted by the armed men and ordered to get on the ground. He refused to comply. Instead of submitting to their demands, Child turned and began to walk back into his room. In response to this defiance, Abreu unleashed a barrage of 13 rounds from his rifle. Two of the bullets struck Child in the back, inflicting fatal wounds. In a strange turn of events following the shooting, the gravely injured Child pleaded with his friends not to take him to a nearby hospital. He instead asked to be driven across state lines to Preston, Idaho. Authorities later speculated this request was made to conceal an illegal marijuana and psychedelic mushroom growing operation that was being run out of the trailer. His friends complied with his wish, but Child succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the Idaho hospital.
The investigation into the bizarre homicide quickly led police to their suspects. Angel Christopher Abreu and his 16-year-old associate were arrested and faced charges of aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated burglary. The case grew more complex as investigators uncovered a wider web of involvement. Two of Child's own roommates were implicated in the crime. Kevin Content was charged with murder, accused of helping orchestrate the robbery to clear a debt he owed to Abreu and of telling others to clean up the crime scene. Another roommate, Devon Miller, faced charges for obstruction of justice and drug production. A third man, Douglas Cordova, was also arrested in connection with the case.
