In the early morning hours of September 28, 2018, a tragedy unfolded in Salt Lake City that claimed the life of Wanyun Judd, a 47-year-old Asian woman. Just before 6:25 a.m., while inside her residence at 54 E. Harrison Ave., Judd was fatally wounded by at least one gunshot. Officers in the vicinity heard the shots and were able to respond to the scene quickly.
Judd was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators soon came to the conclusion that Judd was an innocent victim in a case of mistaken identity. It is believed that her home was wrongfully targeted in what appeared to be a drive-by shooting. At the time of the incident, Judd was reportedly sleeping in her bed when she was struck by the fatal shot. Neighbors remembered her as a kind person who had recently married and tended a garden from which she would give produce to the homeless.
The investigation into Wanyun Judd's murder remains open and unsolved. Witnesses reported seeing two men dressed in dark clothing in a nearby parking lot just moments before the shooting. An Audi A4 was also seen leaving the area shortly after the gunshots were fired. Despite the efforts of detectives, no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made in the years following her death. In an effort to generate new leads, the Salt Lake City Police Department has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for her death.
