On May 21, 2021, Lauren Hoover, a 34-year-old resident of Murray, Utah, was found deceased in a South Salt Lake home alongside 38-year-old Philip Gorst. The South Salt Lake Police Department responded to a welfare check at Gorst's residence on Eugene Lane after neighbors reported hearing gunshots. Upon entry, officers discovered both individuals had died from apparent gunshot wounds.
