In the early morning hours of October 17, 2021, the life of Gabriela Sifuentes Castilla, a 38-year-old Hispanic woman known to her radio listeners as Gaby Ramos, was tragically cut short in Taylorsville, Utah. A popular and beloved host for the Spanish-language station La Mas Picosita, she was a prominent voice within the local Hispanic community. The night of her death, an argument erupted between Gabriela and her ex-boyfriend, Manuel Omar Burciaga-Perea, at the home she shared with her
sister. The dispute was reportedly over an engagement ring. After initially leaving the residence, Burciaga-Perea returned a short time later.
Believing the police had arrived in response to an earlier 911 call, Gabriela opened the door. Instead, she was confronted by Burciaga-Perea, who then shot her multiple times in the chest, arm, and head. The violent act unfolded in the presence of her sister and nieces, who were also in the home at the time. Despite the immediate efforts of first responders, Gabriela Sifuentes Castilla succumbed to her injuries at the scene. In the wake of the shooting, her family mourned the loss of a brave and loving woman, and her death sent shockwaves through the community that knew and admired her.
Immediately following the fatal shooting, the primary suspect, Manuel Omar Burciaga-Perea, fled the scene. Authorities quickly identified him and began a manhunt, believing he might attempt to flee to his hometown of Chihuahua, Mexico. An arrest warrant was issued, and a collaborative effort between U.S. and Mexican law enforcement agencies was launched to locate and apprehend him. The international search culminated on Thanksgiving Day of 2022, when Burciaga-Perea was arrested in Chihuahua, Mexico.
After his capture, legal proceedings began to extradite Burciaga-Perea back to Utah to face justice. In May 2023, he was successfully extradited and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. He has since been charged with aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, and domestic violence in the presence of a child. In September 2024, a judge ordered him to stand trial for the killing of Gabriela Sifuentes Castilla, a significant step forward in the long road to justice for her and her grieving family.
