In the quiet community of Clearfield, Utah, a grim discovery was made on November 23, 2022, shattering the peace of the neighborhood. Janice Grace Walker, an 85-year-old Caucasian female, and her husband, Thomas Walker, 87, were found deceased in the garage of their home. The couple, who had dedicated over a decade to serving their community as members of the Clearfield City Citizen's Patrol, met a violent and tragic end.
The alarm was raised by the Walkers' own daughter, who also resided at the home with her 26-year-old son, Jeremy Dwayne Belt. Upon returning to the residence, she discovered her parents' bodies and immediately fled to a neighbor's house to call 911. When police arrived at the home on 681 N. 1050 West, they found the elderly couple with significant trauma. It was later determined that they had been bludgeoned with a hammer and then shot.
The immediate suspect in the double homicide was the couple's grandson, Jeremy Dwayne Belt. His mother informed authorities that she believed he was responsible for the killings and that he was still inside the house. Belt was taken into custody at the scene without incident. According to charging documents, Belt had been exhibiting signs of paranoia, telling his mother that his grandparents were trying to harm him and that he could feel an electrical current in the room. He reportedly believed there were pinholes in his walls through which people were watching him.
Investigations revealed a chilling sequence of events. After a confrontation, Belt allegedly followed his grandparents into the garage, where he attacked them. He admitted to kicking them and striking them with a hammer. He then retrieved a. 22 caliber rifle and shot both of his grandparents in the head. In a plea deal, Belt pleaded guilty to two reduced counts of murder and was sentenced to serve two consecutive terms of 15 years to life in prison. At the time of the murders, Belt was on pretrial release for a separate case involving an assault on his girlfriend. His criminal history also included several drug-related arrests.
