In the quiet early morning hours of August 20, 2017, the life of Miraheta Skender, a 49-year-old Caucasian female, was brought to a tragic end in her West Valley City, Utah home. At approximately 4:45 a.m., police received a distressing call from the adult daughter of Miraheta and her husband, Samir Skender, 51. The daughter, who lived with her parents, reported hearing gunshots within their residence located at 3171 S.
Ivy Park Drive.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered the bodies of both Miraheta and Samir inside the home. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities recovered at least one weapon from the residence, and the initial investigation pointed towards a domestic violence incident that escalated to a fatal conclusion.
West Valley City Police officials quickly began investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide. The evidence found at the scene led them to believe that Samir Skender was the suspect in the shooting death of his wife, Miraheta, before taking his own life. As the investigation unfolded, this theory solidified, and the case was publicly framed as an apparent murder-suicide. Consequently, no arrests were made as the sole suspect was also deceased.
