On a tragic day in Saint George, Utah, the life of 63-year-old White male, Richard Joseph Harper, was cut short in a violent encounter at his own home. On November 30, 2022, Harper was fatally shot, a devastating event that stemmed from a dispute with one of his tenants.
The series of events that culminated in this tragedy began when a woman visiting the tenant, Joel Curtis Flores, then 43, indicated her desire to see him less.
In response, Flores brandished a handgun, pointing it at her chest. Witnessing the altercation, Harper intervened, demanding that Flores release the woman. She then managed to escape to the safety of Harper's home.
Inside the residence with Harper's 17-year-old daughter, the woman frantically called emergency services. As police were en route, the situation escalated dramatically. Flores fired approximately 12 shots through a glass door of Harper's home. Richard Joseph Harper was struck by the gunfire and killed.
Law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene, and Joel Curtis Flores was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with the murder of his landlord. Following a trial, a jury found Flores guilty of murder, as well as felony discharge of a firearm. In a subsequent sentencing, he was ordered to serve at least 20 years to life in prison for his crimes. The court mandated that his sentences for murder and the firearm discharge run consecutively.
