On a summer evening in 1975, the tranquility of Sandy Hook, a village in Newtown, Connecticut, was shattered by a violent confrontation that left two men dead. On July 31st, Salvatore Saffioti, a 34-year-old male, was fatally shot at the Sandy Hook Hotel. Saffioti, identified as a member of the Bridgeport chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, was one of three men who entered the hotel that day.
The incident stemmed from a business dispute between the hotel's proprietor, Donald E. Krosky, and the owner of the hotel's bar, Charles Framularo. Tensions over an eviction escalated, leading Framularo to allegedly seek assistance from the Hells Angels. Saffioti, along with fellow Hells Angels member Frank D'Amato, aged 23, and another associate, Donald "Big Red" Meredith, went to the hotel armed with knives to confront Krosky.
In response to the threat, Krosky used a. 44 Magnum carbine and opened fire on the three men. The gunfire resulted in the deaths of both Saffioti and D'Amato, while Meredith sustained critical injuries. Following the shootout, Krosky surrendered to the authorities and was subsequently charged with two counts of murder. The violent episode brought a significant amount of media attention to the otherwise quiet community of Sandy Hook and led to increased law enforcement scrutiny of motorcycle gangs in the region.
