In the early hours of May 15, 2014, a tense situation unfolded in a Newington, Connecticut apartment complex that would end in the death of 54-year-old John Reynor, a Caucasian male. The incident began shortly after midnight when police received a 911 call from Reynor himself. He had left his own apartment and moved into the basement of another building within the Gloucester Village apartments on Church Street, prompting a significant police response.
As law enforcement arrived at the
scene, they found a volatile situation. Reynor's children were inside his apartment, initially unaware of the escalating events. For their safety, police evacuated them from the residence, and they were later placed with family members. Authorities also blocked off the surrounding roads and issued a reverse 911 call to alert nearby residents of the danger. Several apartments in the immediate vicinity were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Newington's emergency response team, along with a regional SWAT team, established a perimeter and began attempts to communicate with Reynor.
For approximately ten hours, crisis negotiators were in contact with Reynor, trying to bring the standoff to a peaceful resolution. Despite their prolonged efforts, the situation took a tragic turn. By mid-morning, it became apparent that the encounter had ended badly. An ambulance was seen leaving the scene with its emergency lights flashing, and police began to clear the area.
