On a tragic Friday, March 6, 1998, the life of 54-year-old Otho Brown, a Caucasian male, was cut short in a shocking act of workplace violence. The setting for this tragedy was the headquarters of the Connecticut Lottery in Newington, Connecticut, where Brown served as its president. The day took a horrifying turn when a disgruntled employee, Matthew Beck, unleashed a deadly attack on his superiors.
The gunman, after targeting others within the building, pursued Brown into the parking
lot. There, in a final, desperate attempt to escape, Brown was fatally shot. The chaos and terror of the event were palpable as emergency services descended on the scene. In addition to Brown, three other lottery executives lost their lives at the hands of their co-worker: Frederick W. Rubelmann III, 40; Linda A. Mlynarczyk, 38; and Michael T. Logan, 33.
The violent rampage concluded with the perpetrator taking his own life. Matthew Beck, the sole person responsible for the deaths of four individuals, died by a self-inflicted gunshot. The incident was a murder-suicide, leaving no suspects to be apprehended by law enforcement. The community was left to mourn the sudden and senseless loss of four accomplished individuals, their lives tragically intertwined by the actions of a disgruntled colleague.
