On the evening of December 7, 2020, Jeffrey Vanech, a 49-year-old Caucasian male, was fatally shot in his hometown of Stamford, Connecticut. The incident occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. near the intersection of Henry and Cedar streets in the city's South End. Vanech was seated in his parked vehicle when he was shot multiple times. First responders found him lying in the roadway and administered medical aid at the scene before rushing him to Stamford Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed
to his injuries.
The investigation into the homicide quickly led to an initial arrest the following day. Freddie Hicks, a 36-year-old convicted felon from Stamford, was taken into custody. A witness reported seeing the gunman hand something to Hicks immediately after the shooting. When police executed a search warrant at a Cedar Street residence, they recovered a firearm believed to be the weapon used to kill Vanech. Hicks was subsequently charged with criminal possession of a firearm, hindering prosecution, and tampering with evidence.
Further investigation over the following months pointed to another individual as the primary suspect. Ernest Rosario, a 20-year-old from Harlem, New York, was identified as the alleged shooter. Police determined that the motive for the killing was a debt of approximately $600 that Vanech owed to Rosario. The relationship between the two had soured, and in the days leading up to his death, Vanech had expressed fear to a family member, stating that he felt he was being hunted by Rosario. The night before the fatal shooting, Vanech was reportedly attacked by four of Rosario's associates outside a local bodega.
On September 16, 2021, nearly a year after the murder, a Stamford police officer spotted Ernest Rosario near the city's train station. After a brief struggle, during which Rosario was allegedly found with a loaded 9mm handgun and crack cocaine, he was apprehended. Rosario was charged with murder, along with a host of other firearm and drug-related offenses. He was later sentenced to 50 years in prison for the killing of Jeffrey Vanech.
